The second annual Béret-Baguette bicycle ride – l’age d’or du vélo a la francaise – took place last Sunday as one of the lead ups to Velopalooza next month. A couple dozen well dressed riders of all ages met up at McSpadden Park before taking the easy way down Commercial Drive, through Strathcona and over to the port for a gentle ride to Stanley Park. We stopped a few times along the way, gathering a few strays and our merry crew of stripes and moustaches turning heads. Miles Davis and some period-appropriate French music soundtracked our ride, and we came to Ceperley Park near Second Beach for a picnic Champêtre under cloudy skies. Paté, cheese, fresh strawberries, red wine and of course baguettes from all over town were on offer. Strangers became friends, stories were told and laughs shared. All in all a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I do believe this is the best secret beach I’ve ever come across by bike. From Trinidad, Cuba we rode west towards La Boca, then onwards to Playa Ancón. Along the way, we discovered an empty slice of paradise – black coral under the sea, colourful reef fish in stunning waters and fine sand to laze about on. We didn’t actually make it to Ancón that day, this was just too good to leave. More from that day’s bike ride here.

Vancouver Mini Maker Faire took over the PNE Forum for the another incredible exploration of science, tech, craft and art June 1-2, 2013. I’ve been very impressed by the creativity and dedication to craft at past Faires and this outing was no different. Many highlights were encountered, but finally seeing the the 50-foot mechanical snake Titanoboa in action was downright amazing. 3D printers are still making me question what the future holds, a Maker Mobile was crowdfunding to reality and Colin Johnson’s AT-AT bar – The Emperors Cabinet – is by far the coolest way to serve up a cocktail. In the next little while, I’ll be posting sets from each of the Mayan archeology sites I’ve visited over the past few years in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. I’ve shot so many frames and spent countless hours amongst these amazing ruins, it’s time to edit down a proper collection for each. Here’s a teaser, from Uxmal in the Puuc region of Mexico. The House of the Doves (El Palomar) sits west of the Great Pyramid, itself one of many impressive structures in Uxmal. While I’ve seen a number of the showpiece Mayan sites, something about the grandeur, unique architecture and having the place mostly to yourself make Uxmal a top choice to visit. That and the iguanas perched everywhere on this ancient masonry. Much more to come!
