Makeover Tease: Handsome Devil

Two awesome things happening here…first, my Handsome Devil bicycle has undergone a Bike Makeover for MomentumMag. Really, it was more of a Bike Amaze-ification, as Josh from Kissing Crows Cyclery gave my bike a complete overhaul to match my riding style. What started as a damn fine bike off the rack, has now been tweaked and fine-tuned to become the perfect set of wheels for me. Without giving away too much, here are a few bits and pieces from the updated Devil. Once the latest issue of Momentum hits the newsstand, I will share more juicy details…

Secondly, these are my first shots with a new tool in the bag – a Fuji X-E1 with 35mm f1.4 lens. Ooooh baby, this is one fine set up! It is now my standard walk around camera, replacing the Canon S95, which replaced my Fuji F10, which supplemented my Konica Hexar 35mm. Really, the X-E1 is a direct replacement for my beloved Hexar, a camera I haven’t used nearly as much since pixels began to rule my work but one I still enjoy running the odd roll of Kodak HIE through, when I can find it (rare these days!).

Lots more to come from this camera and bike. In fact, there won’t be many days I will be without one or the other – most likely riding with the X-E1 on my shoulder…

Riding Bikes: Apollo + Ostrich

My old Apollo Prestige road bike, converted to a single-speed and spruced up with a Brooks Flyer Special saddle, Velo Orange Montmarte bars & inverse brake levers, MKS Lambda pedals and Ostrich Handlebar bag. Also installed are some original Bridgestone Roadman fenders, vintage direct from Japan. A comfortable and easy ride for quick jaunts about town.

Tired in the Studio

Here’s another outtake while we were checking lights and composition in the studio the other week. Magda, pictured, was working with me and was the test subject before our model arrived. A bit whimsical with this one…we were both rather pleased with how this ‘test’ shot turned out.

Landscapes: City of Angels to Sin City

A series of landscapes I shot while traveling from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in September. Very cool trip – lots of high desert solitude (minus the steady stream of traffic of course), Joshua Trees, the edge of the Mojave, entrance to Death Valley…. One could spend a few weeks in these parts, camped out, shooting the desolate horizon and watching the tumbleweeds blow. I imagine the sky at night would be fantastic…if you are far enough from the lights of Las Vegas. While my time in the high desert was short, I loved what I saw and will return to capture more of this fantastical place.

Bicycle Portrait: Bike Makeover for Bettyanne

From MomentumMag #58 comes our third Bike Makeover. This time, our subject was Bettyanne Brownlee, a business lawyer in Vancouver, BC who was seeking a way to get back on the bike, and bring her Shelties along for the ride. We set her up with a beautiful Cooper Oporto bicycle and Burley Tail Wagon trailer and she was set…. “We are free and on the move, and loving it!”

Tour de Fat Festival – Los Angeles

New Belgium Brewing presents the traveling Tour de Fat Festival in 15 North American cities over the summer months. I was in Long Beach for a number of bike-related activities, when it was discovered the Tour de Fat was just up in LA that weekend. Perfect! They said it was one of the hottest days on record in LA , and I believe it, but that didn’t stop myself and the Momentum crew from riding, taking three trains and walking through the heat to the L.A. State Historic Park in downtown Los Angeles. A day of music, bicycles and beer in a carnivalesque setting with side shows, live music, games and more. All proceeds from these events go to local bicycle advocacy groups, like LA’s Bike Kitchen, among others. The comedy/hip-hop/science fiction act Ssssnakenstein was hilariously awesome, soon to be followed by Venezuela’s Los Amigos Invisibles who really have it going on. Great event, and I’d be sure to check it out again when I’m in the area. Maybe Fort Collins next time…
