Shootin’ Boots

It’s not often I get in there, but I love it when I do…and had a great session in the studio last week. As usual, most of the shots I did were for editorial purposes, so I can’t share them all until late November. Can’t wait to post a particular tire shot I did. Yes, you read that right. Making tires sexy was a fun challenge!

Here’s an outtake from a collection of footwear I shot. I was assisted by Magda Sierzputowska, currently interning with me at Momentum, and grabbed a quick shot while she was on set adjusting one of the Dansko boots. I thought it turned out rather nicely….enjoy!

Olga & A Yellow Bobbin

A behind the scenes candid from Momentum Mag’s M58 cover shoot. I was on set with photographer Kamil Bialous, who expertly captured Olga Canlas riding the Bobbin Birdie for our Sept/Oct edition. It all came together for a fantastic newsstand cover and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Kudos!

Sunshine Savary

It feels like ages ago, but really it was only a month since I disconnected from the frantic pace of summer with friends up near Lund and Savary Island, BC. Funny, summer typically being a time of relaxation, carefree mornings of coffee and sunshine, lazy bike rides back from sunset on the beach. For me, August, and full on into late September, had been an incredibly busy time. To keep on top of my photo work, I neglected the blog and am just now catching up on edits and posts. I shot a lot this summer, much of it on assignment for editorial and commercial clients, and once these images are released, I’ll share here, too.

This set is from those six days where I was truly relaxed. Surrounded by friends, on one of the most gorgeous stretches of coast for my birthday, it was an idyllic time. I call this ‘Sunshine Savary’ – a title I’ve come back to each time I make my way up to this magical place. Everything just feels right up here. The ocean surprises with Orca, superpods of Dolphin, Seals and Sea Lions, predatory birds and abundant inter-tidal life. This time we camped right on the bluffs and a baby seal slept below our tent the first night. Can’t ask for better company.

As Vancouver enjoys one of the finest autumns in memory, those idyllic days still seem within reach and indeed they are, taking us into the next season. Hang on and look forward. Golden days are always on the horizon.

Cycle Chic: Past, Present & Future Fashion Show

Women on Bikes SoCal presented the Cycle Chic: Past, Present & Future fashion show in Long Beach, CA on September 13, 2012. I was in town attending a few conferences and events with Momentum Mag and this evening was one of the social highlights of the week. Following on the heels of the Women’s Bike Summit, a reception surrounding the incredibly long catwalk on the promenade got the festivities started on what was one of the hottest nights of the year.

The show was kicked off by Melissa Balmer with remarks from Charlie Gandy, Dr. Suja Lowenthal and the Cycle Chic ambassador himself, Mikael Colville-Andersen (see last image for the latter two).  Billed as a “celebration of dressing for the destination”, the models wore items from a large number of local, bicycle-friendly designers and manufacturers. Some models rode, others walked and a couple did the long strut down the packed runway. The looks ranged from casual cyclists in practical attire, California beach cruiser vibes, elegant looks for nightlife and a collection of conceptual outfits from the future (and yes, some gold body paint for good measure).

All in all, a very successful show bringing a lot of positive energy to the blossoming Long Beach cycling scene. They aim to be the nation’s most bike-friendly city and it seems they are moving fast in that direction. More on that and riding around Long Beach in an upcoming post.

Travelling South With Momentum

I’m heading off on assignment for a couple weeks, so blog posts may be sporadic. Working with the Momentum crew, I’m traveling to Long Beach, California for Pro Walk Pro Bike 2012 and the National Women’s Bicycling Summit immediately after. We’ll have a few days to soak up the Cali sunshine before renting a car for the drive through the desert to Las Vegas for Interbike. Pretty stoked for that! At Interbike, I’ll be shooting portraits and gathering editorial for the magazine, but my main job is to interview on camera some of the movers and shakers in the bike industry. I’m also filming for the Gaining Momentum Fashion Show. This will be my fourth time in Sin City for work (and yes, some play) – here’s my clip from the 2009 bicycle fashion show: Urban Legend.

Below are a few pics of Momentum Magazine’s editorial team as of summer 2012. Left-right in the group shot is Tania Lo – Co-Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Duncan Hurd – Managing Editor, Mia Kohout – Co-Publisher & Editor-in-Chief and myself – Photo Editor. The group shot was done by Yvonne Bambrick, a fabulous photographer, bicycle advocate and good friend of ours from Toronto. The solo portraits are by me, all at Vancouver’s Wall Centre during Velo-city Global 2012.

Mini Moments on BC’s North Coast

Here are a few ‘mini moments’ from a recent trip up the Sunshine Coast. We traveled from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay, across Howe Sound & up the southern coast from Langdale to Earl’s Cove. We then took the Island Sky to Saltery Bay, and continued north past Powell River to Lund – the start of the Pan-American Highway 101, which ends in Patagonia, Chile some 15,000km later. For a daytrip, we hopped a water taxi to Savary Island – one of my favourite places to be. An incredible end to the casual days of summer…more pics to come shortly. For now, enjoy a small taste of a day on BC’s Sunshine Coast.

Heels on Wheels: Dansko Bentley Black Nappa

Some shots from a recent session for Momentum’s recurring Heels on Wheels tidbit. One of our editorial interns – Meaghan Hackinen – graciously donned these Dansko Bentley Black Nappa boots for a quick shoot near Chinatown. The image above made the final cut, below are a few of the outtakes and fun shots we did together.
