On The Loom in San Juan La Laguna

davidniddrie_guatemala-5935

Visiting the small village of San Juan La Laguna on the shores of Lago de Atitlán, Guatemala, you will be immediately struck by the dedication to craft and preservation. Just stepping off the lancha you will encounter galleries & artists workshops right on the dock. From seed to final product, coffee farmers grow, harvest, roast and sell their beans. Down the road a bit, a collection of art galleries showcases the colourful, birds-eye-view paintings typical of these lakeside villages, but hailing from this place. Another block away is an ‘artisan’ ice cream shop – too good to resist a scoop, or two.

The highlight for me was visiting the Tejadoras Mayas – Women Weavers of San Juan La Laguna and some of the other cooperativos in town. They grow their own cotton – naturally organic of course – in shrubs surrounding their workspace. They then harvest the cotton balls from the limbs, spinning them down into fine yarns and threads. These are dyed (tinted) naturally with a variety of plant and insect life. Avocado pit, beet, mint, coconut, onion…the list goes on. I purchased a direct trade scarf from the woman who wove it – 6 x 8 hour days she told me to create it – tinted by natural coffee and cocoa. Beautiful shades of earthtones – it’s now a staple in my wardrobe. We had a demonstration of the backstrap loom they weave with. The time and effort it takes to create one small piece is amazing! Choosing direct, fair trade for these items means a sustainable livelihood for this cooperative of women, but also the preservation of traditional ways in a country that has, over time, made this very challenging for the indigenous Maya of the Highlands.

The motto of Tejadoras Mayas: “Education Will Give Us a Better Tomorrow”. Couldn’t agree more!

Gastown Grand Prix 2013

davidniddrie_gastowngrandprix2013-0196

The 40th anniversary of the Gastown Grand Prix was staged last night in downtown Vancouver under sunny skies and summer vibes. Water & Cordova Streets between Carrall and Richards became the (mostly) cobblestoned route as top riders from around the world raced for $45,000 in the purse money. It was an exciting race complete with sprint finishes, chase groups, drops and the hypnotic whizz of the peloton as it flies by – 50 laps for the men, 30 for the women’s group. Great to see this event is back again, part of the BC Superweek of bicycle racing.

I chose to forego the SLR and long lens as I figured there would be a glut of sports shooters on site. Instead, I brought a GoPro Hero3 black edition digital camera. Pairing a super-wide fisheye lens with broad dynamic range produced some interesting shots. I hope you agree! As always, click the first shot below to view the series larger.

Orquesta Típica La Furca

Buenos Aires group Orquesta Típica La Furca performing their take on tango music in San Telmo – the birthplace of tango, or at least Argentine tango, itself. Here are the bandoneón players, complimented by double bass, violins and piano. You can have a listen to their hip yet classic sound here. Shot during the Feria de San Telmo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2007.

Sifónes in San Telmo

davidniddrie_buenosaires_sifones-8353

Spotted at the Feria de San Telmo – a weekly art and antiques fair in the San Telmo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. My backpack just wasn’t big enough for all the treasures I wanted to buy – gramophones in mint condition, silverware from eras long gone, books and art piling off tables and the beautiful glass work of the sifónes – seltzer bottles! They are everywhere. A delivery service exists in Buenos Aires bringing freshly loaded seltzer bottles to doorsteps, residential and business. Formerly in these gorgeous bottles – now mostly plastic – but still ongoing, they are a common site at any dinner table. It might be said there is a love affair swirling between Porteños and their agua gaseosa. Strong coffee, sumptuous red wine and seltzer –  a holy trinity of drink?

Sycamore Shade in Buenos Aires

davidniddrie_sycamore_buenosairea-5959

Peeking into the archives for some shots of Buenos Aires for a client and came across this beautiful tree! Always something new to discover when re-editing, or simply re-visiting, an older collection of work. This is from 2006 in downtown Buenos Aires – these grand trees provide necessary shade in the hot summer months.

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians, wherever you find yourselves! This scene is just around the corner from my office in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
Today, however, I’m taking the day off to enjoy the natural worlds of our west coast :)

Bicycle Portrait: Charlotte

davidniddrie_M61Charlotte-7335

I had a photography session with Charlotte Herst for Momentum Mag recently. Charlotte is a certified yoga instructor, city cyclist and vocalist/musician who loves to share her passions with her community. I’ve been fortunate to attend some of her Hatha classes at Unity Yoga, so she was a natural choice to kick off Momentum’s Yoga for Cyclists series. We did some shots on our office rooftop in Chinatown, then took to Union Street for a few more photos. Fabulously self-styled, Charlotte is riding the Viva Juliett, equipped with Queen Bee rear pannier and House of Talents front basket. You can find her Yoga piece in the latest edition of Momentum Mag #62.
