Gastown Grand Prix 2013

The 40th anniversary of the Gastown Grand Prix was staged last night in downtown Vancouver under sunny skies and summer vibes. Water & Cordova Streets between Carrall and Richards became the (mostly) cobblestoned route as top riders from around the world raced for $45,000 in the purse money. It was an exciting race complete with sprint finishes, chase groups, drops and the hypnotic whizz of the peloton as it flies by – 50 laps for the men, 30 for the women’s group. Great to see this event is back again, part of the BC Superweek of bicycle racing.

I chose to forego the SLR and long lens as I figured there would be a glut of sports shooters on site. Instead, I brought a GoPro Hero3 black edition digital camera. Pairing a super-wide fisheye lens with broad dynamic range produced some interesting shots. I hope you agree! As always, click the first shot below to view the series larger.

Gastown, Vancouver, 2013.
