After a June warmup and some late showers, July came with record-breaking heat and dryness to the Lower Mainland. No rain at all this month, and searing temps really gave a boost to the garden. The squash varieties flowered and grew into little acorn and kabocha squash – cute lil’ things. Tomatoes shot skyward, herbs sprouted from seed and strawberries kept coming. Peas and beans did not fare well, and after a short harvest they fell to the wayside. Something was up in our neighbourhood…many of the gardens on our street suffered a pea/bean breakdown.
The wild flowers we sowed around the yard were really coming in, and the existing landscaping provided a new colour palette each week. Here are a few scenes from the Woodland garden in July. Click on the first to view large.

Playing some pick up chess with the resident barkeep and master of the house in Sayulita, Mexico. A few of our nights ended with some live music and chess on the top floor of Bar Don Pato on Sayulita’s bustling nocturnal plaza. The bartender was happy to be challenged by anyone deemed worthy — buy a beer or a tequila and you have an ‘in’. Our pals took up the challenge on a regular basis, defeating on occasion with a takedown of the beat-up King.
The scene is set with slices of light playing off the palapa roof at the top of the stairs at Don Pato’s – Rubber Duck. I didn’t figure out where the Duck part came in, but I suspect the mural upstairs may play a part. Downstairs picks up with Foosball, a hotly contested tournament staged nightly by my account. Live music on most nights, including local faves The Sayulites who really do kick it in all the right ways. From the upstairs perch, you can sip a tequila, watch the band and take in the townscape at once. It can be a hazy kind of mellow upstairs, drifts of smoke and the clink of glasses while the dub stretches on below. A pretty chill place, it’s an easy pick after a long, hard day of surfing and fish tacos.

Well, a couple weeks back anyways. Today, I’m fishing for editorial & feature images with my Photo Editor cap on ;)
Didn’t catch anything, but saw a massive Spring Salmon cresting a number of times just to tease. Not interested in cured roe, only spawning on the mind…it’s ok, we hadn’t planned on salmon anyways. The Nahatlatch River can be pretty wild, the white water upstream cascades into a tight, deep pool on an eddy where the colour turns to aqua green and the current will pull your bobbin around and around with nibbles on each rotation. Endless enjoyment on a lazy summer afternoon…

We started planting a container garden way back on the Easter long weekend at our place here in East Van. It took a couple months to really get things sprouting, flowering and opening up. Once the real heat of summer began in earnest, the veggie patch started to take off. I made some photographs around the garden each month, starting with June. Here are a few scenes from the ‘Land of the Woods’ — our Woodland garden – at the start of summer. Click on the first image to view large.
