Face the Past

Don’t believe the hype. Reports of an impending ‘Mayan Apocalypse’ are a fabrication of the western world, whose interest in Mayan culture appears cursory at best. There is much to learn from Mayan history, it’s rich culture of art, religion and science. The Mayan people I’ve spoken with in Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico…all appreciate the significance of this date. However, there have never been any references to an ‘end of the world’ scenario in any of their history, simply the end of a period of time, a b’ak’tum. What’s next? The 14th b’ak’tun begins in the Maya Long Count Calendar after the solstice on Dec 21, 2012. Business as usual I suspect.

Copán, Honduras, 2012.
