During a spring shoot for HUB, I spent two afternoons shooting model cyclists (cycling models?) around downtown Vancouver. We had a number of shots planned and working with Isabelle Swiderski of Seven25 was a pleasure. One of our subjects was Sara Blenkhorn, who describes herself as a social entrepreneur, systems thinker, fire spinner, animal lover, micro finance advocate, and foodie. She’s also the President and Founder at Future Strategies. Here are a few takes from our session on the Dunsmuir Viaduct, Robson Square and along the seawall near Cambie in Vancouver, BC.
You’ll see it all in Cuba’s big cities. Stunning, neoclassical works of art in Cienfuegos, preserved neighborhoods and homes in Trinidad, Art Deco wonders throughout Santa Clara. In Havana, however, the range is astounding. From completely collapsed three story structures on the Malecón, to massive buildings teetering on the brink, scaffold-supported shells covered in vine and tropical foliage, and cinder block filled archways to prevent further deterioration. The amount of work in restoration in Havana alone is incredible, and with some World Heritage funds assisting in La Habana Vieja particularly, the results are slowly bringing the grandeur back to this remarkable colonial architecture. Each corner you turn reveals a certain state of repair as you’ll see in these few pics from Havana below.

BikeStyle at the Sylvia Hotel in Vancouver’s West End. While this shoot is from two years ago, it still counts one of my favourite bicycle fashion sets from Vancouver. Styled by Molly Millar and shot on location with the deep shadows of a setting sun on English Bay, everything came together for a stunning look with Natalia and Len looking sharp in vintage. The Sylvia has one of the most atmospheric exteriors in town, the walls lined with heavy vines and blossoming flowers mix with the stone work surrounding. Inside, the view of the sun dipping into the Pacific Ocean is a perfect compliment to a fine Old Fashioned cocktail. And of course, arriving in style on your bike is a classy touch.

Since I’ve been daydreaming a little today, wishing my gaze could turn upwards to palm trees & sunshine instead of the grey haze of rainy day Vancouver. I love how the sun burning through the leaves and the colourful lens flare creates a dreamy effect here….pretty much sums up how I feel today. A bit of a longing for the tropics…

I was working as art director (aka softbox holder) with photographer Jonathan Spooner on a full page portrait for Momentum. Of course, I had my trusty Fuji along for some snaps, too. I knicked this shot just as Jonathan, down the sidewalk, got the money shot for the magazine. Local rider Arthur Orsini, from Urbanthinkers, heading to a job on a brand new Tern Eclipse S11i folding bike. What a look!
You can see Jonathan’s final shot in Momentum #60, available now.
